Full-field strain measurementĪn exciting extension of the capabilities of video extensometers is the availability of integrated digital image correlation (DIC) software capable of producing full-field strain distributions (Fig. 3). As with automatic extensometers, noncontact video extensometers also reduce the influence of the operator, which improves the consistency of test results. When testing inside a temperature chamber, the video extensometer can be located outside the chamber, isolating the measurement system from the hostile environment. Determination of Poisson’s ratio in tensile and compression testing requires the additional measurement of transverse strain.Īs these extensometers do not make physical contact with the test specimen, there is no possibility of the extensometer influencing the material behavior or of the extensometer being damaged by the energy released when the test specimen fails. The use of an average strain measurement is essential for compression testing, as the difference between the two measurements is used to check for excessive specimen bending. However, more consistent and accurate results can be achieved by taking a pair of measurements on opposite sides of the specimen and using their average to compensate for any misalignment. General aspects of strain measurementsįor tensile testing of composite materials, measurement of axial strain can be achieved using a single-strain measurement on one side of the test specimen.

However, these benefits come at the cost of increased material complexity, and it is easy to overlook the challenges of producing high-quality test data to support the needs of materials development, design and quality control. It would be nice to have a list so people can potentially seek out such monitors who aren't able to source a nice RGB CRT monitor or expensive upscaler. I'd like to list which devices are known that can natively accept RGB - and I mean properly no smoothing algorithms screwing with the image, no unfixable sharpness enhancer, no 480i de-interlacing on a 240p image - just a good 240p RGB image.

A CRT PC monitor won't sync as low as 15Khz horizontal, and most LCD monitors refuse to attempt to sample at a low resolution like that. Every now and then I try hooking up a system to a VGA monitor using RGB (pins 1, 2, 3 for RGB, pin 13 for CSYNC).
